On December 9, 1992, my one-year old daughter Zeva was diagnosed with a terminal disease. My wife Lee and I were terribly despondent and frightful about Zeva’s future and our own as well. We were embarking upon a journey that no matter how much life had taught us, we were totally unprepared for. How could we survive this ordeal? How can this child just die? Why us, God? After the shockwaves dissipated and all the preliminary encounters with grief had been spent, Lee and I decided to dedicate ourselves to simply making Zeva comfortable and loving her the way she was. During this desperate time, I connected with Family Voices and some remarkable individuals in the organization. Family Voices understood my plight and fought for me to get much needed help. They gave me hope, support and information that was vital to my family’s needs. They were there for me when I needed them the most.
Today, I am the Chairperson of this fine organization. As Chairperson, I want every family who has children with unique health needs to know there is an organization whose leadership is composed almost entirely of parents of children with disabilities that will not only hear your concerns, but make every attempt to act on them as well. We are truly on the side of families and have fought hard within the Colorado Legislature and other arenas to garner many vital resources necessary to serve children with unique health needs. I hope Family Voices will make life a little easier for you and your family as it did for me and mine. Should you have any ideas that will make us a better organization, please let me hear from you. I wish you the best on your life’s journey.
